J.J. Abrams Gets The Boot as New Director for "Star Trek 3" Is Chosen

The new Star Trek 3 director has been confirmed. Director J.J. Abrams has been officially replaced, according to sources, and with recent developments it’s not difficult to figure out why.

Even though fans were split almost violently over Star Trek Into Darkness, the persisting opinion is that its attempt to remake Wrath of Khan was not well received. It replaced the dark drama involving Captain Kirk’s emotional involvement (his wife was killed) with an action film that recycled key moments in new ways. The fans of the original were not pleased that a movie they considered a classic was remade at all.

This wasn’t what led to J.J. Abrams being replaced as the Star Trek 3 director though. He apparently needed to focus on another massive undertaking with the continuation of the Star Wars franchise under the supervision of Disney. While George Lucas is still a creative consultant for Star Wars Episode VII, he backed out as the director and left Abrams in the director’s chair.

Details on the plot of Star Trek 3 are still unknown. Fans are hoping that it doesn’t attempt to remake another classic, and takes the franchise into new territory unlocked by the reboot with Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto.

Since Captain Kirk is obviously single in this timeline, the chances of him having a son are minimized, so the chances of another ill-received remake surrounding his death are nill. Add to this the fact that the new Star Trek 3 director replacing J.J. Abrams is none other than Roberto Orci, one of the pair of writers responsible for the initial reboot.

Rumors have claimed that the new movie will not be another retelling like Into Darkness, and it will have a brand new story. This means the crew might not be commandeering a Klingon vessel and rescuing a humpback whale again, though the animosity with the Klingons has been established.

With J.J. Abrams no longer the director, some moviegoers are probably expecting a noticeable absence of the lense flare and shaky camera work that Abrams is unfortunately known for. Hopefully the new movie will retain the action emphasis that brought in a new audience for the franchise.

The expected Star Trek 3 release date is sometime in 2016, to coincide with the impending Star Trek 50th anniversary. A lot is riding on this next movie, and hopefully it fares better than James Bond’s last anniversary entry, the critically slammed Die Another Day.
