A Japanese pop star has yet to regain consciousness after being stabbed more than two dozen times by a fan.
Mayu Tomita, 20, is in critical condition after the attack during an event Saturday after she apparently refused a gift from 27-year-old Tomohiro Iwazaki, who is now charged with attempted murder, Japan Times reported.
Tokyo police said Tomita was stabbed in the neck and chest. Witnesses said Iwazaki attacked the young singer about 5 p.m. He admitted to the attack, police said.
The Metropolitan Police Department said Tomita may have been a victim of stalking. She had told police earlier this month that a man named Iwazaki had been persistently messaging her through her blog and Twitter account.
He reportedly told police he ambushed Tomita and asked her why she returned a gift he had sent her. BBC reported. “I lost my temper because she didn’t clearly answer,” police quoted him as saying.
Tomita had been working as an actor and pop star while completing her college studies.
In 2014, two teenage members of the Japanese girl group AKB48, during a regular meet-the-fans event, were attacked by a man wielding a saw.
