Joan Rivers’ Passing Causes The Clinic That Treated Her To Lose Accreditation

Joan Rivers' Passing Causes The Clinic That Treated Her To Lose Accreditation 2

Yorkville Endoscopy, the Manhattan clinic where Joan Rivers suffered a fatal complication during a procedure on her vocal cords, will lose its federal accreditation at the end of the month, reports WABC News.

Last November, the New York State Department of Health cited the clinic for numerous deficiencies related to the 81-year-old comedian’s case, and now the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has decided that, as of Jan. 31, the clinic will no longer be eligible to receive federal funds for services provided to Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries.

Rivers, who died Sept. 4 from lack of oxygen to her brain following an Aug. 28 visit to Yorkville Endoscopy, went into cardiac arrest and stopped breathing while undergoing a procedure on her vocal cords.

While the State Department did not cite the clinic for negligence, as the comedian’s death was classified as a therapeutic complication, CMS terminated the clinic’s federal funding for violating Rivers’ right to privacy — a staff member allegedly took photos of the comedian while she was under anesthesia, reports NBC New York.
