Joel Kinnaman Brought In To Lead In Netflix’s ‘Altered Carbon’ Series

Joel Kinnaman has been tapped to headline Netflix’s upcoming sci-fi series Altered Carbon.

The 10-part series is based on Richard K. Morgan’s 2002 cyberpunk noir sci-fi novel set in the 25th century, when the human mind can be digitized and the soul transferred from one body to the next.

The RoboCop and Suicide Squad actor will play Takeshi Kovacs (the character is of Japanese and Eastern European descent and a native of Harlan’s World in the novels), a former elite interstellar warrior known as an Envoy who’s been imprisoned for 500 years. Downloaded into a future he tried to stop, he must solve a single murder (not an easy feat when technology has made death pretty much obsolete) in order to have a chance at a new life on Earth.

The series will be created, penned and executive-produced by Laeta Kalogridis, whose producing and writing credits include Avatar, Shutter IslandTerminator Genesis and Alita: Battle Angel. She acquired the rights to Altered Carbon (which happens to be a passion project for her), as well as the other books in the “Takeshi Kovacs” series, four years ago. Here’s what Kalogradis said about the book:

“Altered Carbon is one of the most seminal pieces of post-cyberpunk hard science fiction out there — a dark, complex noir story that challenges our ideas of what it means to be human when all information becomes encodable, including the human mind.”

It’s not the first time Joel Kinnaman and Netflix have worked together. The actor starred as Detective Stephen Holder on four seasons of The Killing and has also appeared on Season 4 of House of Cards as Republican presidential nominee Will Conway.
