Singer John Mayer announced that he is choosing to cancel his concert tour to get surgery for recurring vocal chord issues.
“I went for a visit on Wednesday and a scope of my vocal chords revealed that the granuloma has grown back where I had it mostly healed. This is bad news. Because if this, I have no choice but to take an indefinite break from live performing. Though there will be a day when all of this will be behind me, it will sideline me for a longer period of time than I care to have you count down.”
The 34 year old singer had planned to go on a 21-city tour to promote his new album, Born and Raised. The album will still be released on May 22. Mayer plans to begin writing his next album while healing from his vocal chord issues.
“Somewhere in all of this is another surgery and a very long chemically-imposed period of silence. So I hope you’ll understand that I have to really pick that date (to resume performing) carefully.”
Mayer last had surgery in October, to remove the granuloma on his vocal chords he referred to in his statement. Adele received the same type of surgery last year, at which time Mayer offered her his full support.
Mayer explained the nature of his condition,
“A granuloma forms and continues to snowball because it’s in a spot where the vocal chords hit together and there’s no way to really give it a chance to heal without a good stretch of time and some pretty intensive treatment. In short, it’s one giant pain in the ass.”
How eloquent of him.
