In the final Daily Show of 2013, Jon Stewart surprised John Oliver with a heartfelt tribute and retrospective highlighting his more than seven years with the show. Oliver was unprepared, especially since he and Stewart had spent the afternoon readying a bit about the royal hacking scandal. Instead, Stewart kicked back, put a foot on his desk and just started talking about his friend, who’s leaving to host his own HBO show. “We’re not doing the bit?” interrupted Oliver, who was clearly disappointed at first.
The lengthy tribute included Oliver’s Dickensian imitations, “sophisticated wit,” rhythm-challenged dance moves, and hilarious jaw-dropping interviews with oblivious political figures. “We’re going to miss you,” Stewart said, as Oliver, clearly moved, shed a tear.
Carry on, John Oliver. We’ll miss you.
