Lady Gaga's New 'Joanne' Album Lands Her Top Honors In Billboard Charts

Global pop superstar Lady Gaga has topped the Billboard 200 yet again with her new album Joanne. The big debut marks her fourth time at the highest point on the U.S. albums chart in her career. The new album, which gets its title from a mix of the singer’s late aunt and her own middle name, begins with 201,000 equivalent units, 170,000 of which were actual sales.

Joanne’s No. 1 debut follows a hot streak that Gaga has been on for a few years now. She first made it to the peak back in 2011 with Born This Way, which kicked off with a million-plus first week, thanks to several hundred thousand copies that were sold via Amazon, which discounted digital versions to less than one dollar. While that sort of practice changed the rules of the Billboard charts, Born This Way was headed to the top with a massive figure anyway. A few years after that campaign, she reached the top again with Artpop, and then for a third time less than a year later with her Tony Bennett duets record Cheek To Cheek. Gaga’s only full-length to miss the No. 1 spot on the Billboard 200 is her debut, The Fame, which did eventually make it to the runner-up position.

After finding incredible success with electro dance-pop, Gaga has gone in a different direction with Joanne, which sees the singer putting her own spin on Americana, mixing in elements of rock, country, and of course, pop. Reactions from fans and critics have been mixed upon first listens, but the singer’s fan base, her “monsters,” are dedicated, and at this point in her career, it would be difficult for her to miss out on debuting a new album at No. 1.

Lady Gaga officially launched the campaign behind Joanne just last month when she released the album’s lead single, “Perfect Illusion.”The song debuted within the top 20 on the Hot 100, though it didn’t stick around for too long, descending week after week. Follow-up promotional single “Million Ways” made it onto the singles tally as well, and it’s possible that when the charts are fully refreshed, at least another one or two tracks could also appear on the ranking.
