Latinas in America have a long story of making their mark. A truly pionera is Rita Moreno. You can watch her in West Side Story (Hulu.) For her performance she won an Oscar for Best Suporting Actress.
She’s also the first Latina, and one of only three, to attain the “PEGOT” status by winning a Peabody, Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony award.
The collection also highlights Latinas who have been the first:
- The first Latina astronaut:Ellen Ochoa – True Colors (Peacock).
- The first Hispanic and third female Supreme Court Justice in United States History:Sonia Sotomayor – The Latino List (HBO).
- The first indigenous woman to be nominated for an Academy-Award:Yalitza Aparicio – Roma (Netflix)
- The first transgender person to present at the Oscars:Daniela Vega – A Fantastic Woman (Sony).
Latinas have also left an impression behind the cameras. An example of their creations are Gentefied (Netflix), Superstore (NBC), Culture Shock (Hulu.)
There are also inspiring stories like the award winner movie Dolores (PBS) about the life of Dolores Huerta. A civil right activist who has fought for gender equality. Or the series Celia (Peacock) about the life of the Reina de la salsa. Others like El inconveniente (HBO) are a great example of women lifting each other up.
