CELEBRATE THE HEART AND SOUL OF THE BEACH!
Cities from coast to coast have declared August 10 LIFEGUARD APPRECIATION DAY. The declaration coincides with the United States Lifesaving Association’s 2017 National Lifeguard Championships, which take place in Daytona Beach August 9-12, 2017, and with the DVD release of the action-packed comedy Baywatch.
Baywatch actor David Hasselhoff showed his appreciation by declaring: “Lifeguards are the real heroes. They have saved so many lives …even my own. Today is their day and I truly salute you with honor and humility!”
In honor of our lifeguards, below are a few fun facts that’ll surely make you appreciate those men and women protecting our beaches:
- In 2016 lifeguards performed over 88,000 rescues
- Provided medical assistance to more than 343,000 people
- USLA has calculated that the chance a person will drown at a beach protected by USLA-affiliated lifeguards is one in 18 million
