They are both controversial performers who like to shock their fans.

So it seems fitting that singer, Miley Cyrus, 21, should choose ballsy pop icon, Madonna, to perform alongside her as a surprise guest for her upcoming MTV Unplugged special.

E! News report that sources saw the two superstars on a Hollywood sound-stage on Monday, where they were rehearsing the collaboration.

Their song of choice is still said to be unknown but no doubt the duet will make pop history. Madonna is well-known for her headline-grabbing performances with much younger female artists.

There was that famous VMA performance of Like A Virgin in 2003 with both Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera – the star famously kissed Britney as a symbol of passing on her pop crown.

Madonna also performed with both M.I.A. and Nicki Minaj at the Superbowl in February 2012.

The performance was marred in controversy after M.I.A appeared to flip the middle finger during the performance of hit song, Give Me All Your Luvin’

55-year-old Madonna most recently teamed up with Macklemore & Ryan Lewis at the Grammys for the hip-hop duo’s performance of Same Love.

Soon after, Ryan Murphy jokingly tweeted a picture of the cast of Coven with Madonna in her black Grammys outfit leading the way, writing: ‘This Wednesday…maybe Madonna is the new Supreme. ‘

Miley’s Unplugged show will be taped on Tuesday and will air on the music network on Wednesday night at 9pm in America.

The performance will reportedly show a more intimate side of Cyrus and it will feature a number of surprise guests for an unexpected reinvention of some of her most famous songs.

MTV said in a press release last week: ‘Miley and her fans have always had an intimate and direct connection through her music, personality and no-holds-barred attitude.

‘The Unplugged stage will serve as the perfect platform for her to show viewers what inspires and ignites her music and her passions.’

The star has compared herself to Madonna before and believes they share the same love of controversy and risk-taking.

She recently reflected: ‘Last night, I was talking about some Madonna performances, and I said, “At some point, everything becomes irrelevant.” Like, no one even thinks about when she did Like a Virgin at the VMAs.

‘That just becomes a standard, where it’s just like, “Oh, that’s her thing.” So, I feel like now that I did the VMAs, that just kind of became a standard for me.

‘And then any time I do anything else, they’re like, “Miley kept it tame tonight.”’

Cyrus kicks off her 38-city Bangerz tour on February 14 in Vancouver, Canada. A spokesperson for both Miley Cyrus and Madonna has been contacted by MailOnline for comment.
