Michelle Rodriquez Clears Up Her Controversial Superhero Statements

Last Friday, TMZ asked Michelle Rodriguez about a supposed rumor linking her name with Green Lantern. She laughed off the rumor and then shared her opinion that people should stop trying to change white superheroes. You can view her full comments by clicking here.

Her comments have sparked a lot of responses online and she felt compelled to clarify her comments by posting a new video on her facebook page. You can read a transcription below or watch the video at the bottom.

“Hey guys, I want to clarify my comment from yesterday. I stuck my foot in my mouth once again and I said that people should stop trying to steal white people’s superheroes. I guess it got taken out of context because a lot of people got offended or whatever. I have a tendency to speak without a filter. Sorry about that.

What I really meant was that ultimately at the end of the day there is a language and the language that you speak in Hollywood is: successful franchise. And I think that there are many cultures that are in Hollywood that are not white that could come up with their own mythology. We all get it from the same reservoir of life – the fountain of life. It doesn’t matter which culture you come from. Instead of turning a girl character into a guy, or instead of turning a white character into a black character or Latin character – I think people should stop being lazy and people in Hollywood should take the time to develop their own mythology.

And you know what? If being American is your mythology and the American culture is deeply embedded into who you are and what makes you the type you are trying to portray in a Hollywood feature or a comic book so be that. I’m just saying, the different cultures from around the world that are in Hollywood: Latin, black, Asian so on and so forth considered minorities because there aren’t a lot of writers representing them they should start focusing on making that a serious priority. It’s not about taking Catwoman or Superman or Green Lantern or whatever these characters are and trying to make them fit to whatever cultural background you are. It should be more creative than that. People need to stop being lazy. That’s what I meant by my comment.

I’m taking it to heart as well. I’m considering this when I’m out there trying to come up with projects to do and things to write. It’s time to stop; to stop taking what is already there and trying to make it fit a culture into it. I think it is time to write our own mythology and our own story – every culture! That’s what I really meant and I’m sorry if it came off as rude or stupid. It’s not what I meant. Cheers.” – Michelle Rodriguez
