“Mortal Engines,” releasing on December 14, 2018, is centered on a giant, seven tiered London on wheels after the events of the cataclysmic Sixty Minute War that occurred thousands of years prior. A new way of living has evolved after the sixty-minute war new civilizations began to rise, gigantic moving cities now roam the Earth, ruthlessly preying upon smaller traction towns. London is a traction city, which means it devours smaller weaker cities in order to pillage them for resources in a world fast running out of them. Those who are opposed to the traction city status quo are known as anti- tractionists. Bringing us to Tom Natsworthy (Robert Sheehan)—who hails from a Lower Tier of the great traction city of London whom finds himself fighting for his own survival after he encounters the dangerous fugitive Hester Shaw (Hera Hilmar). Two opposites, whose paths should never have crossed, forge an unlikely alliance along with Anna Fang, a dangerous outlaw from London, to lead a rebellion against a giant predator city on wheels that is destined to change the course of the future.
The film is based on the novel of the same name by Philip Reeves, “Mortal Engines” is the startling new epic adventure directed by Oscar®-winning visual-effects artist Christian Rivers (King Kong). Joining Rivers are “The Hobbit” and “The Lord of the Rings” trilogies three-time Academy Award®-winning filmmakers Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, who have penned the screenplay. Visual effects are created by a Weta Digital team led by Ken McGaugh, Kevin Smith, Luke Millar and Dennis Yoo.
