New Trailer for 'X-Men: Days of Future Past' is here 2

The future is here.

The latest trailer for the upcoming “X-Men: Days of Future Past” landed Monday, giving fanboys a major glimpse into a superhero saga that’s as much Shakespeare as it is Stan Lee.

In the time traveling tale, the 1970s version and near future versions of the X-Men are linked by an assassination of a key senator that sets off a chain of events leading to a dystopian landscape in where mutants are hunted into virtual extinction.

As members of the X-Men are killed off by mutant-hunting Sentinel robots — quite possibly including Storm (Halle Berry), judging by a shocking scene glimpsed quickly in the trailer — onetime enemies Magneto (Ian McKellen) and Professor X (Patrick Stewart) must unite to send Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) back in time to change the course of history by stopping Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence).

“It’s going to take the two of us side by side, at at time when we couldn’t be further apart,” Ian McKellen’s Magneto tells his lifelong frenemy.

Director Bryan Singer’s return to the X-franchise, which hits theaters May 23, is loosely based on a popular storyline of the same name by writer Chris Claremont and artist John Byrne during their seminal “X-Men” run.

The time-spanning plot of “Days of Future Past” allows McKellen and Stewart to return to the roles they made famous in Singer’s earlier “X-Men” movies — alongside Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy, the actors who played the younger versions of Magneto and Professor X in the 2011 prequel, “X-Men: First Class.”

If it wasn’t official before, the film is seen as a passing of the torch to the younger cast.

“Magneto is a sensational part and it’s only fair that someone else should have a go,” McKellen told a New York Daily News reader during a recent live web chat.
