There was high drama in New Jersey Thursday night, when Newark Mayor Cory Booker played hero – rescuing his next-door neighbor from a house fire and carrying her to safety.

Upon returning home from a TV interview, Booker, 42, noticed that his neighbor’s home was ablaze.

Although his security personnel tried to hold Booker back, he broke away from them after hearing the woman’s cries and ran to the second floor, where he encountered flames and smoke, reports Newark’s Star-Ledger.

“I look behind me and see the flames and I think, ‘I’m not going to get out of here,'” Booker told the newspaper. “Suddenly I was at peace with the fact that I was going to jump out the window.”

But after finding the woman in a back bedroom, Booker was able to carry her from down to the first floor.

Booker, the woman he rescued, and three members of the security detail were taken to a local hospital. Booker was treated and released, and the woman was listed in stable condition Friday, says the Star-Ledger.

“Thanks 2 all who are concerned. Just suffering smoke inhalation. We got the woman out of the house. We are both off to hospital. I will b ok,” Booker Tweeted Friday.

Booker also reportedly suffered second-degree burns on his hand.
