Oh My! ‘Wizard of Oz’ Ruby Slippers Set for Auction

There’s no place like home … a new home, that is, for Dorothy Gale’s iconic ruby slippers. The glimmering red shoes will be auctioned by California’s Profiles in History auction house on Dec. 16 as part of a Hollywood memorabilia sale — and according to Reuters, they’re expected to earn between $2 and $3 million.

“This is the most important film prop in the world. There is nothing more famous,” Profiles in History owner Joe Maddalena tells Reuters. “They are one of the greatest pieces of pop culture in existence.”

These particular slippers are one of four known surviving pairs made for the 1939 film, and were believed to have been worn by Judy Garland. They are marked “#7 Judy Garland,” and are reportedly in perfect condition, save for a few light scuffs on the soles.

A costume department worker found the shoes on the MGM lot in the early 1970s; they were later sold to a private collector during an auction in 1988. The whereabouts of the other three remaining pairs are scattered: one is on exhibit at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History in Washington; one pair is privately owned; and sadly, the third was stolen from the Judy Garland Museum in Grand Rapids, Minn., in 2005.
