VOLVER and ALL ABOUT MY MOTHER
Penelope Cruz has a muse for one of the most recognized filmmakers in the world, renowned Spanish director Pedro Almodovar. In “Volver”, Penelope plays a young mother, part of three generations of women who, according to Almodóvar himself, “survive solano winds, fire, madness, superstition and even death through goodness, lies, and a limitless vitality.” Thanks to this film, Penelope received her first Oscar nomination for Best Actress.
Another collaboration between Almodóvar and Penelope is the classic “All About My Mother,” which won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Film in 1999. In this heartbreaking story, a mother must deal with an immense loss and continue to push through the challenges that arise.
VICKY CRISTINA BARCELONA
Penelope won her first golden statue for her role in Woody Allen’s “Vicky Cristina Barcelona,” in which she played a supporting role next to Academy Award-winner and now husband Javier Bardem.
Salma Hayek left her mark in the history of cinema and art thanks to her deep and honest portrayal of the surrealist artist, Frida Kahlo. She also produced this 2002 film and received an Oscar nomination for Best Actress.
DESPERADO and ONCE UPON A TIME IN MEXICO
These two films, in which Salma stars next two well-known Spanish actor Antonio Banderas, are perfect for those with a taste for action and big explosions. Both movies, written and directed by Robert Rodriguez, tell the story of El Mariachi, a traveling musician feared by his enemies for his incredible ability to shoot (and hide) his weapons.
