People’s Choice Awards 2012: Katy Perry, ‘Harry Potter’ big winners

Katy Perry and “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2” were the big winners of the night at the People’s Choice Awards. The 38th annual show, held Wednesday night in Los Angeles, celebrated selections made by 40 million voters.

Perry took away the most awards, sweeping five categories, reports the Associated Press.

An absentee Perry was honored in five categories, including favorite female artist, tour headliner, song of the year for “E.T.” with Kanye West, music video for “Last Friday Night” and TV guest star for “How I Met Your Mother.”

Despite originally being touted by the show’s organizers as among the nominees expected to attend, Perry told fans on Twitter earlier this week that she wouldn’t make it to the show but that “I want to thank u all for voting for me, fingers crossed!” It would have marked Perry’s first public appearance since British actor-comedian Russell Brand filed for divorce from Perry last month after 14 months of marriage.

The last film of the Harry Potter series caught four awards of its own, including Favorite Movie, Action Movie, Ensemble Movie Cast and Book Adaptation. Surprisingly, its young cast members missed out on what would have seemed an obvious win, says Jen Chaney of Celebritology:

Weirdly, though, Chloe Grace Moretz, star of “Hugo,” managed to beat out practically the entire cast of “Deathly Hallows Part 2” in the Favorite Actor Under 25 category. Maybe Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint and Tom Felton split the vote?

Emma Stone and Johnny Depp took home two trophies a piece, for favorite movie actress and actor respectively, favorite animated voice for “Rango,” and comedic movie actress. Depp was another no-show at  the awards, but Stone was more in awe of the wins, reports the Associated Press:

“I moved to L.A. eight years ago this week with my mom, who’s right there,” Stone said while accepting her pair of crystal trophies. “It is so insane to be standing up here right now. It is hard to describe to you.”

Of the nearly 30 other winners, Jen Chaney of Celebritology compiled the most relevant:

Kim Kardashian was named Favorite TV Celebreality Star. Gene Simmons and Kathy Griffin, who both lost in this category, have got to to be ticked.

• The People’s Choice Awards is broadcast on CBS. And coincidentally, a pair of CBS shows won the Favorite New TV Drama and New TV Comedy categories: “Person of Interest” and “2 Broke Girls,” respectively.

• Nathan Fillion made perhaps the best acceptance speech of the evening when he claimed his Favorite TV Drama Actor award by looking at his Waterford crystal statuette and addressing his fans: “Let this giant crystallized tear of victory symbolize your excellent taste.”
