Prince has released his second album in three months, following up from September’s HITNRUN PHASE ONE with PHASE TWO dropping exclusively on Tidal this weekend. Far from having bashed it out in mere months, Prince has actually been crafting the 12 track record for the past 3.5 years and a number of the tracks have previously been heard live but never released.
Opening the album is Black Lives Matter protest track Baltimore, which references police brutality against the black community in America and includes slogans used at protests in Baltimore over the summer: “If there aint no justice, then there aint no peace”.
Prince also released PHASE ONE on Tidal, saying at the time, “After one meeting, it was obvious that Jay Z and the team he has assembled at TIDAL recognise and applaud the effort that real musicians put in 2 their craft 2 achieve the very best they can at this pivotal time in the music industry,” adding that, “TIDAL have honoured Us with a non-restrictive arrangement that once again allows Us to continue making art in the fashion We’ve grown accustomed 2 and We’re Extremely grateful 4 their generous support”.
Tidal subscribers can listen to the album in full, and non-subscribers can hear snippets of each track. Prince tweeted to say, “PLEASE EVERYONE PURCHASE THE PRODUCT AFTER LISTENING…,” as well as retweeting lots of feedback from fans.
