Ava DuVernay’s A Wrinkle in Time has assembled its trio of mysterious and celestial Mrs. W’s.
Reese Witherspoon and Mindy Kaling are in negotiations to join Oprah Winfrey in the upcoming Disney movie, EW has confirmed. In July, news broke that Winfrey was in talks to star as the enigmatic Mrs. Which in the adaptation of Madeleine L’Engle’s beloved children’s book. If Witherspoon and Kaling officially sign on, they would round out the trio of women as Mrs. Whatsit and Mrs. Who, respectively.
L’Engle’s novel follows the young Meg Murry as she, her brother Charles Wallace, and her friend Calvin O’Keefe travel across space and time to rescue her missing father. The three Mrs. W’s are immortal beings who manifest themselves in different ways, first appearing as three women who live in a supposedly haunted house near the Murrys.
Mrs. Which (Winfrey) is the oldest and wisest of the three, who struggles the most to maintain a human form, while Mrs. Who (Kaling) speaks in famous quotations. Mrs. Whatsit (Witherspoon) is the youngest and initially shows up at the Murry household looking like an elderly bundle of rags (although later, she memorably appears as a winged centaur).
DuVernay is directing the Disney adaptation from a script by Jennifer Lee, who wrote and co-directed Frozen.
The Hollywood Reporter first reported the news.
