Taking advantage of two big items in the news last week, British comedian Ricky Gervais sent out what he thought was a topical, comical Tweet. But his Valentine’s anti-immigrant joke didn’t go over well with the Latino community and was quickly deleted.
Speaking about Valentine’s “date night,” Ricky poked fun at a negative Hispanic stereotype.
“Guys, show how much you love your wife tonight in the restaurant by buying a dead rose from the illegal immigrant who pops in,” he wrote.
Not surprisingly, it was almost immediately removed. But not before a ton of backlash seeped in. Gervais was heavily criticized for being insensitive towards Latinos and the immigration cause.
So far, Ricky’s yet to make an apology. But he did post a message that seemed to address the issue.
“Don’t let anyone tell u how u should be using Twitter. If they don’t like it, they can unfollow, block, ignore. & remember, u can too. Enjoy.”
