He liked it so he put a ring on it! Ricky Martin recently proposed to boyfriend Jwan Yosef, he revealed during a Wednesday, November 16, appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. Watch him tell the sweet story in the video above!
The “Nobody Wants to Be Lonely” singer, 44 — who came out as gay in 2010 — opened up about his relationship with the Syrian-born artist, 32, and his decision to pop the question after more than a year of dating.
“Well, now he lives with me. He’s a conceptual artist and I’m a collector, so I started looking for art and I saw his art and I went crazy because I really love what he does. Really original. And then I contacted him,” Martin told Ellen DeGeneres, explaining how he and Yosef first met. “I had no idea what he looked like and then I saw what he looked like and I’m like, Yeah. And we just got engaged.”
Asked about the proposal, the hunky Menudo alum told the talk show host, 58, that it didn’t go as smoothly as he had hoped.
“I proposed. I was really nervous, but I got on my knees and I took out the little metal box — I just had it in a little velvet pouch — and instead of saying ‘Would you marry me?’ I said, ‘I got you something!’ Bad!” he said with a laugh. “And then he was like, ‘Yes?’ I said, ‘I want to spend my life with you,’ and he was like, ‘What is the question?’ ‘Would you marry me?’ That’s it.”
DeGeneres told Martin how happy she was for him, to which he replied, “Yeah, it was very beautiful.”
Once the rush of asking for Yosef’s hand in marriage subsided, Martin had to double check with his new fiancé about whether he had accepted the Grammy winner’s proposal.
“And then 30 minutes after, I said, ‘Did you say yes?'” the Me author quipped. “He said, ‘Yes.’”
Back in April, Martin confirmed his romance with Yosef by Instagramming a photo of the two holding hands at the amFAR Inspiration Gala in Sao Paolo, Brazil. The Latin heartthrob captioned the pic: “Yup.”
In a 2015 interview with PrideSource.com, Martin — who is the dad of 8-year-old twin sons Matteo and Valentino — revealed that he was ready to find love again.
“To be honest, I love being in a relationship. … I love waking up in the morning and, if you’re not with your boyfriend, [sending] that first message or text in the morning: ‘Hey baby, how ya doing? I hope you’re fine. I just woke up. I’m doing this and this and this today.’ I love that,” he shared with the site. “I really do. And I love picking up my phone and waiting for that reply from that text — it’s great … I love being in love.”
