Robert De Niro Given Go Ahead To Direct 'A Bronx Tale' Musical

Robert De Niro is co-directing a musical version of A Bronx Tale that’s set to take the stage next year.

New Jersey’s Paper Mill Playhouse’s 2015-2016 season includes the new adaptation, with music from Tony and Oscar winner Alan Menken.

A Bronx Tale is based on Chazz Palminteri’s one-man show, which first played in Los Angeles in 1990 followed by an off-Broadway run in New York (and a Broadway revival in 2007). It focuses on an Italian-American teenager in the turbulent 1960s, who must chose between his father and a mob boss father figure. A film adaptation came out in 1993, directed by De Niro and starring him as the teen’s father, with Palminteri as the gangster.

The musical has a book by Palminteri, lyrics by Glenn Slater, and choreography by Sergio Trujillo. It will run at the Paper Mill Playhouse in Millburn from Feb. 4 through March 6.
