Lady Gaga expects your full attention, no matter what she’s singing. In the Grand Ballroom of the Plaza Hotel on Friday night, for the Harper’s Bazaar bash celebrating Carine Roitfeld’s September Icons cover shoot, the singer stopped in the middle of her second song due to the large audience’s incessant chatter.
“Will you m*ther f*ckers shut up? We’re playing some jazz,” she said, clad in a dramatic black and white outfit by her sister Natali Germanotta and in a seemingly newly acquired baby voice. “Goddamn rich people.”
While this drew laughter from the crowd, it didn’t quite cause them to quiet down during her set, which included jazz classics such as “Bewitched” and “Firefly” (“This is John F. Kennedy’s favorite song,” Gaga declared grandly to the audience about the tune), and songs from her collaborative jazz album with Tony Bennett, “Cheek to Cheek,” which will be released on September 23rd.
After dedicating a cover of Cole Porter’s “Ev’ry Time We Say Goodbye” to her family and boyfriend, actor Taylor Kinney, who was in the audience, Gaga once again asked the audience to keep their talking to a minimum.
“So, if you all could keep it down while I sing my boyfriend a song, I’d appreciate it,” she said to the crowd, which included Linda Evangelista, Brooke Shields, Nicki Minaj, Kate Upton, Kendall Jenner, Lauren Hutton and Donatella Versace.
The black-tie event, which Gaga declared was the “most fabulous night of fashion week,” honored women in fashion including Evangelista, Shields, and Gaga — each who appeared on the Roitfeld-styled September Bazaar cover.
