Soundgarden's 'Avengers' Single, 'Live To Rise' Free Download: Band's First Single In 15 Years Available For Free

Soundgarden may have broken up in 1997, but they’ve assembled together to release their first single in 15 years, “Live to Rise.” The song will appear on the soundtrack for “Marvel’s The Avengers.”

However, “Live to Rise” will be available as a free download on iTunes beginning April 17 as part of the promotion for Disney’s “Avengers” film, reports Billboard. The promotion will run until April 24, and fans will also get to preview an exclusive clip, entitled “The Face Off,” from the anticipated Marvel movie.

“Live to Rise” pretty much picks up where the grunge rockers left off, with a serious guitar riff and a wailing, anthemic Chris Cornell vocal track. Singer-songwriter Cornell and guitarist Kim Thayil wrote the tune specifically with the “Avengers” movie in mind.

“The hard part of writing a song for a film is it has to act as a Soundgarden song, first and foremost, then obviously, it has to coexist with the film,” Soundgarden frontman Cornell told Billboard. The band had been approached to contribute a song to the film’s soundtrack in March, amidst working on their reunion album, which is slated for a fall 2012 release.

The “Avengers” soundtrack — “Avengers Assemble” — will include 14 tracks, including songs from Shinedown, Rise Against, Bush and Five Finger Death Punch. The album will be released on May 1.

Directed by Joss Whedon and starring Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, Scarlett Johansson, Tom Hiddleston and Samuel L. Jackson, “Marvel’s The Avengers” hits theaters on May 4.
