A William Shatner Star Trek 3 movie may be coming to a theater near you, and the original Captain Kirk says the rumor is true.
Shatner has been approached to play a role in the new movie, which he denied having a camera in the upcoming reboot sequel. Little did we know, there was something in the works, and it was a surprise that he didn’t want to ruin. It’s been long suggested that he would reunite with Leonard Nimoy’s Spock during a scene in Star Trek 3.
It’s not the first time that a William Shatner Star Trek link has been in the works. The 2009 film, directed by J.J Abrams, was originally set to feature the legendary actor although his role was eventually cut during script rewrites.
The William Shatner Star Trek 3 stories first surfaced at the recent Wizard World Nashville Comic-Con where he backtracked on earlier denials and admitted that producer JJ Abrams had been in touch.
Asked if he would be interested in a part, Shatner said:
“Oh, yeah. If it is meaningful.”
He said that he would be “delighted” to make an appearance, before adding that he had been sworn to secrecy.
“So I get back from Australia, and it is all over the internet that the director held an interview and said they wanted Shatner and Nimoy to be in the next movie … I bet JJ is frothing at the mouth.”
William Shatner also joked that it would be difficult to come up with a scenario in which he could appear.
“How do you get me fifty years later into the movie? … I know it’s science fiction, but even I couldn’t come up with an idea.”
Star Trek 3 is set to film within the next six months. If the scene were to be included, it would mark the pair’s first joint appearance in a Star Trek film since 1991’s Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. It will also be Shatner’s first screen appearance as the famous Captain Kirk since StarTrek: Generations in 1994.
A William Shatner Star Trek 3 film could very well be true because in 2016, it will mark the 50th anniversary of Gene Roddenberry’s original TV show. The idea doesn’t sound so ridiculous, especially since Captain Kirk and Spock are still with us today. It could very well happen and the fans would love it.
