LOS ANGELES, CA – On Friday, November 1st, A List Hollywood came out to support the first ever “Backyard Bowl” gala for A Sense of Home (ASOH), the Los Angeles based, nonprofit which creates homes for aging out foster youth. What started out as a random act of kindness by founders Georgie Smith and Melissa Goddard 5 years ago, ASOH has now created 500 homes and has evolved into an efficient nonprofit homeless prevention model, complete with software that is ready to be scaled across the country.
In attendance were Cindy Crawford, Kaia Gerber, Sylvester Stallone, Jennifer Flavin & Sistine, Sophia & Scarlet Rose Stallone, producer Mike Medavoy, the “insta famous“ Stauffer family; Lucila Sola & daughter Camila Morrone, Tobey Maguire, Tatiana Dieteman, Soleil Moon Frye, Leonardo di Caprio, Carly Steele, Suki Waterhouse, Sugar Ray Leonard, Rachel Zoe, Cindy Eckert, Zach Braff, Ambassador Colleen Bell, Sybil Robson Orr, Zoe & Olivier de Givenchy, Kelly Meyer & Lawrence Bender.
The sold out event was co-chaired & underwritten by Producer Gary Gilbert (La La Land, The Kids Are Alright, Garden State) & wife Charlotte who also hosted the event at their home in Beverly Hills. Co chairs included Peter Morgan, Serena and Shawn Levy, Harvey Mason Jr., Julie & Jimmy Darmody, Greg Link, Lucila Sola, Carol Bell and Holly Wiersman.
Jamie Foxx MC’d the evening surpassing the fundraising goal and raising almost $1m from the audience followed by recognition of the honorees who have supported the organization from day one and whom made it all possible. Ambassador Nicole Avant and her husband Netflix’s Ted Sarandos who made the very first donation in the form of a truck which gave the fledgling organization momentum (literally and figuratively) and have since been consistent donors. Also honored, Irena Medavoy who began championing the organization from inception and connecting the organization to her influential community, including the final honoree Jena King who has the been the single largest donor. The band The War & Treaty from Nashville kicked off the musical part of the night with a soulful performance, followed by the inspiring Tyrese, and closed out with hip-hop legend Quavo of Migos.
The event was sponsored by Moët Hennessy and “Urbanology“ from Ashley Home furniture which provided all furnishings for the event and all of these items are then going into the homes to be created leading up to the holidays.
Harnessing the Excess Capacity Business Model (as made popular by AirBnB), ASOH is an innovative nonprofit that leverages excess capacity in furniture & home goods as well as goodwill in the community to prevent homelessness by creating first-ever homes for youth aging out of foster care.
30% of those struggling with homelessness are former foster youth. The homeless crisis can only end through prevention. ASOH strives to create a physical home that is the embodiment of the dreams and unique personality of each youth (and their young family) to transform their experience of scarcity and survival to one of comfort and care.
The ASOH “home creations” system has proven to be an enormously successful employee team-building experience sought out by leading global companies (such as Snap Inc). The euphoric and life changing experience for volunteers during the ASOH Home Creation is a unique space to exercise one’s humanity in ways that typically lay dormant. Unleashing a wave of positive results for all involved.
