Taylor Swift Shares About Her Mother’s Recent Cancer Diagnosis

Taylor Swift Shares About Her Mother's Recent Cancer Diagnosis

Taylor Swift revealed to her fans on Thursday (April 9) that her mother, Andrea Finlay, has cancer. The pop star took to her Tumblr to share the upsetting news with her followers.

“Hey guys, I’m writing to you with an update I wish I wasn’t giving you, but it’s important and I’m used to sharing important events in my life with you,” says Swift. “I’m saddened to tell you that my mom has been diagnosed with cancer. I’d like to keep the details of her condition and treatment plans private, but she wanted you to know.”

In her post, Swift explains that, for this past Christmas, she asked her mother to go to the doctor to get screened for any possible health issues. The “1989” singer adds that “there were no red flags” and her mother “felt perfectly fine,” but the results came in and she has officially been diagnosed.

Swift says that although she usually likes to process things and then “write music about how [she] feel[s],” both her and her mother thought the public should know about it so others can take precautions with their own heath.

“[My mother] wanted you to know because your parents may be too busy juggling everything they’ve got going on to go to the doctor, and maybe you reminding them to go get checked for cancer could possibly lead to an early diagnosis and an easier battle,” says Swift. “She wanted you to know why she may not be at as many shows this tour. She’s got an important battle to fight.”

She continues, “Thank you for caring about my family so much that she would want me to share this information with you. I hope and pray that you never get news like this. Love you. Taylor.”

Following news of Finlay’s cancer diagnosis, fans of Swift and her mother reached out to the family on Twitter to show their support.
