Terrarium Eyes Are All about Going Big Or Go Home

Ellie Costello's Terrarium eyes

By day, Ellie Costello, a U.K.–based 19-year-old, is a MAC Cosmetics makeup artist. But by night, she is known as @makeupisart_x on Instagram, where she shares photos of “terrarium eyes” with her followers.

What are those, do you ask? Ellie’s unique look involves using flowers, leaves, and other plants to decorate your eyelids. Terrarium eyes certainly redefine the phrase au naturel, as it involves actual elements of nature.

The young makeup artist seems to apply all of her plant-based creations onto her own eyelids. She shares photos of her looks on Instagram, where she has over 10,000 followers. She started this trend about two months ago, with a post she titled “Enchanted Forest.” Her next terrarium eyes post came approximately two weeks later. “Here is my entry to the @nyxcosmetics_uk #faceawardsuk ??,” Ellie wrote alongside a shot of her face covered in a gorgeous look that featured several white and yellow flowers amidst a yellow-and-purple makeup masterpiece. “I was inspired by the flowers growing in my garden (I apologise to my mum for the now missing flowers) ?.” While it’s unconfirmed whether Ellie exclusively uses real plants in her creations (we’ve reached out to her for comment), they all do appear to be pretty real. In the caption of another photo, she mentioned that she used forget-me-nots from her garden to create the look.

Over the past few weeks, Ellie has really embraced the trend, sharing a slew of nature-inspired styles. In the caption of one post, she credits fellow teenage beauty blogger @ItsJuneJune for inspiring her to experiment with flowers in her work.

This is not the first beauty trend to incorporate items from nature. This past October, both succulent hair and succulent nails sprouted onto the beauty scene. Succulent hair doesn’t actually involve the plant—instead it’s simply an ombré hairstyle based on the fading colors of a succulent plant. However, succulent nails involves glueing tiny succulent plants to fake fingernails, meaning that as your nails grow longer, so will the plants. Ellie’s idea is far less of a time commitment, but no less beautiful — or alive.
