Senior Beyoncé correspondent Jessica Williams defended Beyoncé’s Super Bowl 50 halftime show—which was full of “black girl magic”—on Monday’s episode of “The Daily Show.”
“The black girl magic in that video was out of control,” she said. “She was like a beautiful black Dumbledore, but wearing a really nice weave and $3,000 worth of Gucci.”
Williams’ monologue came because old, white men condemned Beyoncé’s performance, which included homages to Malcolm X and the Black Panther Party, as “outrageous.” Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani said her performance had a distasteful “political position.”
Williams said racial politics were brought in for a fairly obvious reason: Beyoncé is black.
“As a black person, you walk around every day constantly reminded that you are black. We’re more likely to get paid less, we’re more likely to get sent to prison and we’re more likely to win a dance competition. What? It’s not all bad,” she added.
