Rumor has it that Peter Jackson may morph The Hobbit into a trilogy. This speculation began earlier this month at Comic Con, when Jackson mentioned that there was plenty of footage leftover from the production of The Hobbit as well as material in the six appendices of The Return of the King that he’d like to bring to life. Judging by the payday Lord of the Rings got (nearly $3 billion worldwide!) it’s pretty safe to say that Warner Bros. isn’t necessarily balking at the idea.
Many fans of the Tolkien series are finding it difficult to say whether or not they approve of Jackson dragging The Hobbit into three parts. It’s been done with several book-movie adaptations, like The Hunger Games, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, but dragging on Bilbo’s journey into three (notoriously long) movies seems like a stretch. The appendices that Jackson has mentioned at the end of the third LOTR book does indeed have six parts, but many are made up of family trees, calendars, linguistic notes and pronunciation guides.
Neither the studio nor Peter Jackson have commented on the reports, so don’t get your panties in a bunch just yet. If you can’t wait to get to Middle-Earth, there are plenty of things you can do to curb the anticipation. For one, you can devise cool wallpaper with this little tool Warner Bros. made.
You can also watch Peter Jackson’s production diary of The Hobbit which has plenty of fun footage to keep you entertained.
