He’s back: After four years of hibernation, The Wolverine returns to the multiplex with his very own standalone film, “The Wolverine.”
Directed by James Mangold, “The Wolverine” comes after 2009’s “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” which attempted to give star Hugh Jackman his very own blockbuster away from the “X-Men” franchise. That worked and it didn’t: the film earned $373 million worldwide, but was derided by fans as a misfire for the character. “The Wolverine” will attempt to fix that by focusing on events after “X-Men: The Last Stand,” meaning Wolverine must deal with the fallout of Jean Grey’s death by his own claws. (Famke Janssen makes an appearance during a particularly sad dream sequence.) Other than that, the new “Wolverine” trailer brings the action: Wolverine fights any number of samurai warriors, including what looks like a giant robot samurai. Tony Stark not included.
