'Twilight' Reboot? Lionsgate Denies Report About Remake

The “Twilight Saga” wraps up in November with the release of “Breaking Dawn Part 2,” but that might not be the last time you hear from Edward and Bella. According to the website Bloody Disgusting, executives from Lionsgate and Summit — the studios behind “Twilight” — are privately chatting about a potential franchise reboot.

Few other details were given by Bloody Disgusting, and the report was soon denied by Lionsgate movie chief Rob Friedman. In an interview with Deadline.com, Friedman said the studio had no current plans to remake the franchise.

The “Twilight” franchise has been the equivalent of an ATM for Summit Entertainment. The films have earned over $2.5 billion around the world since “Twilight” was released on Nov. 21, 2008. Expectations are that the final film, “Breaking Dawn Part 2,” could be the biggest hit yet at the box office.

Summit was purchased by Lionsgate last year, giving the super-studio the franchise rights to both “Twilight” and “The Hunger Games.” With at least two more “Games” films coming in the next two years — and potentially a third film, should the studio officially decide to split up “Mockingjay,” the final “Hunger Games” book, as has been rumored — Lionsgate and Summit will have plenty of YA money in the coffers through 2015. Whether any “Twilight” reboot happens after that is obviously unclear, but stranger things have happened. After all, “The Amazing Spider-Man,” a reboot of your friendly neighborhood superhero franchise, is hitting theaters next month — just five years after the last “Spider-Man” film.

If a franchise reboot does occur, don’t expect to see many “Twilight” cast members back again. They seem perfectly pleased with how “Breaking Dawn Part 2” closes things out.

“The end is so sweet. There’s this nice finality to it,” Robert Pattinson told Entertainment Weekly in a recent cover story. “Everyone who was watching started crying. It does a serious justice to the series.”
