Ubisoft Going Next-Gen Only, No Longer Working On Xbox 360 and PS3 Titles

Ubisoft will no longer release games for PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360, except for its casual rhythm series Just Dance.

The company confirmed the move last night during a financial call with investors, and explained that it would focus on the current generation of consoles and PC from here on out.

Last year Ubisoft released two different Assassin’s Creed games: Rogue for PS3 and Xbox 360, plus Unity for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.

Recent release Far Cry 4 was cross-gen, with versions available for consoles on both sides of the generation gap.

But this year’s London-set Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate is for PC, PS4 and Xbox One only. Incredibly, it will be the third major entry in the franchise to launch on the newer platforms (Black Flag, Unity and Syndicate) in the space of two years – and that’s without spin-off series Assassin’s Creed: Chronicles.

It also means that this year will be the first that a major Assassin’s Creed game has not launched on PS3 and Xbox 360 since the series began.

Ubisoft’s statement leaves its stance on Wii U development unclear.

The company previously said that Watch Dogs was the last “mature” title to launch on Nintendo’s platform. Just Dance support is expected to continue, although it’s uncertain if Ubisoft will launch any other Wii U games beyond that.
