UNIVERSAL CITY, CA – USA Network has tapped Rafael Amaya, star of sister network Telemundo’s super series “El Señor de los Cielos,” to make a crossover appearance as his character Aurelio Casillas, in the upcoming original drama series, QUEEN OF THE SOUTH.

Amaya will recreate his character from “El Señor de los Cielos,” Aurelio Casillas, a drug lord who seeks power and respect as he eludes the DEA and Mexican authorities.  He comes face-to-face with Teresa Mendoza (Alice Braga, “City of God”) and is intrigued.  QUEEN OF THE SOUTH is currently shooting in Dallas.

A native of Mexico and current Los Angeles resident, Amaya is one of the best-known actors in telenovelas today.  Star of “El Señor de los Cielos,” which premieres its new season on March 28 at 10PM ET/PT on Telemundo, Amaya also serendipitously appeared in “La Reina del Sur” in the role of “El Güero.”  Named one of People en Español’s “50 Most Beautiful People” in 2012 and 2014, Amaya achieved success in the television movie “Meddling Mom” and has also acted in a number of Spanish-language movies, including “Desnudos,” “Así del Precipicio,” “Caliz,” “Amor Letra por Letra,” “Fotonovela,” “Pepe & Santo vs. América,” “The Fighter” and “Atrocious.”   He starred in the movie “24 Cuadros de Terror” and in the Mexican TV series “Los Simuladores en el Capítulo” and “El Pacto Copérnico.”  He also appeared in the films “Rock Mari de Chava Cartas” and “Me Importas Tú…y Tú.” Amaya is represented by Innovative Artists.

QUEEN OF THE SOUTH tells the powerful story of Teresa Mendoza, a woman who is forced to run and seek refuge in America after her drug-dealing boyfriend is unexpectedly murdered in Mexico.  In the process, she teams with an unlikely figure from her past to bring down the leader of the very drug trafficking ring that has her on the run.  Starring Alice Braga (“City of God”) as Teresa, the original drama series is based on the global best-selling novel “La Reina Del Sur,” by internationally-acclaimed author Arturo Pérez-Reverte.  The literary page-turner also yielded one of the most popular super series of all time for USA’s sister network, Telemundo.  The series also stars Veronica Falcón (“Besos de Azúcar”) as Camila Vargas, Justina Machado (“Six Feet Under”) as Brenda Parra, Peter Gadiot (“Tut”) as James Valdez, Hemky Madera (“Weeds”) as Pote Galvez and Gerardo Taracena (“Apocalypto”) as Cesar “Batman” Guemes.  Guest stars include Joaquim de Almeida (“Our Brand is Crisis”), Jon Ecker (“Narcos”) and James Martinez (“Breaking Bad”).

The drama is executive produced by David T. Friendly (“Little Miss Sunshine,” “Courage Under Fire”), along with M.A. Fortin and Joshua John Miller (“The Final Girls”).  Scott Rosenbaum (“Gang Related”) will serve as showrunner.  The pilot was written by Fortin and Miller, directed by Charlotte Sieling and executive produced by Pancho Mansfield (“Damien”).  Fox 21 Television Studios developed and produced the pilot and will run lead on the co-production with Universal Cable Productions.
