In tragic Batman news, a gunman opened fire on a Colorado movie theater during the midnight showing of Christopher Nolan‘s The Dark Knight Rises. At least 12 people are dead, including a 6 year old child. Over 50 people were left injured.
The suspect, 24 year old James Holmes, is now in custody. He entered the theater wearing a gas mask, much like the one worn by the villain in the film. He threw a tear gas canister into the theater and then opened fire on the crowd as people left the theater screaming in terror. Ten of the victims died in the theater, and the other two have since died of complications.
Warner Bros issued an statement about the tragic news:
“Warner Bros. is deeply saddened to learn about this shocking incident,” the studio said in a statement. “We extend our sincere sympathies to the families and loved ones of the victims at this tragic time.”
In the wake of all this, Christopher Nolan, Christian Bale, Anne Hathaway, and Morgan Freeman have cancelled press conferences. The Paris premiere of the film was also cancelled in response to the shooting.
Because of the acts of one crazed gunman, repercussions are being felt not only by the victims in the theater, but to the extent of the movie industry as well. Warner Bros. cancelled the red carpet premiere, as well as press interviews with Christopher Nolan and the other actors in the film. Journalists who showed up to the Paris Le Bristol Hotel were told to leave.
News of the shooting made headlines world-wide, especially in France, where the actors were scheduled to appear. There has been no word from Warner Bros. on whether the premiere will be rescheduled or be cancelled altogether. Nolan and the rest of the cast have not made any comments to the press yet.
