One of the great American classic Westerns is about to get a modern makeover. The Magnificent Seven – itself a remake of Seven Samurai – is scheduled to hit theaters this September. The first trailer, which stars Denzel Washington in the lead role appears to be a much grittier, more violent movie than the original, starring Yule Brenner, Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson and James Coburn among others.
In the film, Washington’s Sam Chisolm recruits a band of gunslinging misfits played by Chris Pratt and Ethan Hawke – who sign up for a suicide mission, to defend a small town against a formidable force under the command of Peter Sarsgaard’s villain. The Western reunites Washington and director Antoine Fuqua, who previously directed Denzel in Training Day and The Equalizer.
The Magnificent Seven opens in theaters nationwide on September 23rd.
