Almost a year ago to the day (OK, so we’re about a week off), it was announced that David Fincher would indeed be stepping behind the lens for World War Z 2, but there was also this curious tidbit in Scott’s write-up of the news:
“…World War Z 2 (or whatever it ends up being called) has not been given an official greenlight yet, but with Fincher onboard and Brad Pitt set to return, all signs point to Paramount pulling that trigger any day now. According to their sources, the film would begin shooting in early 2018.”
Well, Early 2018 turned into Fall 2018, and now it seems like that date is going to be bumped back as well, as The Playlist reports:
“Earlier this year, reports flew around that David Fincher‘s World War Z sequel might be gearing up for a fall 2018 shoot. It seemed unlikely then, given what we were hearing and sources close to the project have confirmed to us that it’s definitely not happening at all.”
The story goes on to say that Mindhunter Season 2 is next up for Fincher, who’s currently deep in pre-production in Pittsburgh on the Netflix Original Series (which is set to start shooting at the end of this month).
So, is World War Z 2 totally dead? One would think so, as it keeps getting delayed and delayed and delayed. Though despite being five years removed from the first film, it still made a ton of money, which means an ailing Paramount probably isn’t going to be giving up the ghost anytime soon. As the Playlist puts it:
“The untitled World War Z sequel draft is still in development and apparently not ready quite yet, but some scouting has taken place in Bilbao, Spain, Sweden, Texas and other locales around the world.”
The script is being penned by the awesome Steven Knight (Locke, Eastern Promises), so there’s still some hope for the sequel, but we’re not holding our breath or anything.
Anyways, bring on Season 2 of Mindhunter. That show totally rules.
