Mark Zuckerberg Investing $2 Million To Bring Internet To Schools Across The Nation

Mark Zuckerberg has always said that Facebook’s mission is to connect the world. Now, he and his wife Priscilla Chan are working to connect the country’s schools, as well.

Today, Zuckerberg announced that he and Chan are donating $20 million to EducationSuperHighway, a non-profit that is expanding broadband access in schools. The donation coincides with a new EducationSuperHighway report released today that shows 20 million students in the United States have gained broadband access in the classroom since 2013. It’s dramatic progress in a short period of time—just the sort of thing that appeals to Zuckerberg and his “move fast” ethos. A $20 million donation, along with continued support from the Obama administration’s so-called ConnectED initiative to push for connectivity in schools, should help close the digital divide in education that remains.

Zuckerberg’s most famous—or infamous—education project was his $100 million donation to Newark School District back in 2010. Since then, the young founder and his wife have expanded their philanthropic portfolio in education.

Through their foundation, Startup:Education, they’ve invested in the micro-school startup, AltSchool, donated $120 million to schools in the Bay Area, and started working with Summit Public Schools to develop personalized learning technology. Just recently, the couple said they would be opening their own school, called The Primary School, for low-income students.

Behind all of this activity is Zuckerberg’s belief that personalizing education with the use of technology is key to reforming America’s schools. But of course, technology itself can’t accomplish much without access to the Internet in the classroom. As Zuckerberg put it: “One day we’ll connect the world and provide personalized learning for all students, and we’ll keep focusing on this until that happens.”
