Ellen Page Thanks Ellen DeGeneres for Inspiring Her To Come Out

We applauded Ellen Page’s decision to come out in a beautiful, emotional speech at the Human Rights Campaign’s Time to Thrive campaign back in February. But while we’ve certainly made incredible progress as a nation in accepting the LGBTQ community, during an interview with Ellen DeGeneres yesterday— which will air on May 27, just after her latest movie, X-Men, premieres— Page revealed that at the moment of her speech, she felt “the most nervous” she ever has in her life. “My biggest fear of doing it was having a panic attack,” she said. But the Juno actress also acknowledged and expressed gratitude for DeGeneres’ own example, since even just 17 years ago, when the talk show host came out in 1997, it was “much harder and much scarier.”

In the latest issue of Flare, Page also knocks that pastor who had the nreve to hand her a note chastising her sexuality while on a flight together, calling it “the worst kind of homophobia.” But all in all, she notes the general response to her announcement has been “remarkably positive.” She told Ellen, “I did not anticipate just how happy I would feel in just every aspect of my life just an ease and a comfort and it’s really been quite extraordinary to feel just the shift it was pretty much overnight too.” We should hope so—and kudos are still in order.
