Netflix Series ‘Carmen Sandiego’ Slated for 2019 Announces Decision Confirming Gina Rodriguez For Titular Role

Gina Rodriguez will be the voice of Carmen Sandiego in new animated series

Netflix‘s upcoming Carmen Sandiego series just announced that Finn Wolfhard (Stranger Things, IT) will voice Player, Carmen’s chief accomplice and friend.

In the upcoming animated series produced by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, Carmen Sandiego is back and ready for a new crop of international capers packed with thrilling adventure and intrigue. This fresh take presents an intimate look into Carmen’s past where viewers will not only follow her escapades but also learn WHO in the world is Carmen Sandiego and WHY she became a super thief.

Jane the Virgin star Gina Rodriguez will play the title character in the show, which received a 20-episode order (22 minutes each) from Netflix and will reportedly be educational as well as entertaining. Rodriguez will still be able to film the fourth season of Jane the Virgin, and do a feature film in her time off.

Criminal mastermind Carmen Sandiego was the star of a number of games, working against the ACME Detective Agency as the head of V.I.L.E. The games taught kids geography and history, math and English. The character has appeared in books and other products as well. Carmen is a thief and considers her crimes to be a game. She was also part of the ’90s children’s game show Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?The show famously had the a cappella band Rockapella as their house band. They performed the famous theme song “Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?”

Duane Capizzi (The Batman) is co-executive producer and showrunner for Carmen Sandiego, with CJ Kettler (The Tick) serving as executive producer. Visual design is by Kevin Dart (Mr. Peabody & Sherman) and Chromosphere, and the animation studio is DHX Media. The animated series will premiere in 2019.
